Proper winterization protects your irrigation system from freezing temperatures and costly damage. Water left inside pipes, valves, and sprinkler heads can freeze and expand, potentially causing cracked components, burst pipes, and expensive repairs. Winterizing your system also helps extend its service life and maintain reliable performance from season to season.
Some companies take shortcuts by forcing compressed air through the backflow prevention device or connecting directly through sprinkler heads. These methods can place unnecessary stress on valves, seals, fittings, and especially the backflow preventer—one of the most expensive components of your irrigation system. \
At The IrriGators, we first confirm that your system has a properly installed blowout connection located beyond the backflow preventer. If it does not, we can install the correct connection to provide safe access without forcing air through components that were not designed for it.
We carefully clear each irrigation zone using controlled air pressure to remove trapped water while protecting the system’s critical components. If you have an above-ground backflow prevention device, we can also modify it to be detachable, allowing it to be safely stored in your home, garage, or another area protected from freezing throughout the winter. Winterization should be completed after your lawn has gone dormant but before the first hard freeze—typically between late October and mid-November, or when nighttime temperatures consistently begin dropping into the low 40s.

The IrriGators inspect the sprinkler controller, watering programs, power supply, transformer, backup battery, field wiring, rain or freeze sensor, valves, sprinkler heads, nozzles, filters, spray patterns, visible piping, system pressure, and the performance of each irrigation zone. We also check for underground leaks, broken heads, clogged nozzles, overspray, runoff, dry areas, and uneven watering throughout the property.
Damaged sprinkler wiring can prevent one or more zones from turning on, cause several zones to stop working at once, activate the wrong zone, or make multiple zones operate together. During the inspection, we examine controller terminals, station wires, the common wire, valve solenoids, electrical splices, and visible connections for loose terminals, corrosion, damaged insulation, moisture intrusion, crossed wires, and short circuits.
We manually activate each irrigation zone to confirm that the controller is sending the correct electrical signal to the appropriate valve. When a zone fails to respond or operates unpredictably, we evaluate the controller output, field wiring, solenoid, and valve to determine whether the fault is caused by damaged wiring, a failed component, or another problem within the irrigation system.
Whenever practical, we correct programming, reconnect loose wires, repair accessible electrical connections, adjust watering schedules, straighten sprinkler heads, and improve spray direction. After the inspection, we explain our findings and recommend any sprinkler wiring repair, controller service, valve repair, or other system improvements needed to restore dependable operation, improve coverage, reduce water waste, and protect your lawn and landscaping.
